Nonlinear water clarity trends and impacts on littoral area in Minnesota lakes

چکیده
Lake water clarity is an indicator of quality, trophic status, and habitat condition. Changes in impact lake ecosystems may reflect land use changes or presence invasive species. Quantifying temporal can be challenging because varies seasonally, annually, spatially within among lakes. We developed a hierarchical generalized additive model to quantify trends (Secchi depth) from 1979 2018 for 909 Minnesota lakes, accounting seasonal spatial variability. Water increased by 0.41 m across lakes 1984 1988 2014 2018. Lake-specific varied: did not change significantly 59.0% 34.5% decreased 6.5% dynamics caused considerable variability littoral area between seasons years. Our results have wide applications aquatic ecology, including understanding food webs, assessing fish habitat, evaluating impacts

Application of MODIS Imagery for Intra-Annual Water Clarity Assessment of Minnesota Lakes
Monitoring of water clarity trends is necessary for water resource managers. Remote sensing based methods are well suited for monitoring clarity in water bodies such as the inland lakes in Minnesota, United States. This study evaluated the potential of using imagery from NASA’s MODIS sensor to study intra-annual variations in lake clarity. MODIS reflectance images from six dates throughout the ...
متن کاملMeasuring Water Clarity and Quality in Minnesota Lakes and Rivers: A Census-Based Approach Using Remote-Sensing Techniques
Over the past few decades, satellite-derived information has become an integral part of our daily life. It is difficult to imagine how crude and inaccurate weather forecasts would be without the daily satellite feeds that drive the complex models on which weather forecasts are based, and of course the satellite images themselves have revolutionized how we view the movement (and scale) of weathe...
متن کاملTwentieth century water quality trends in Minnesota lakes compared with presettlement variability
A diatom-based transfer function was used to reconstruct water chemistry before European settlement in 55 Minnesota lakes. The lakes span three natural ecoregions, which differ in their history of land use, as well as in surficial geology, climate, and vegetation. Postsettlement trends were compared with water chemistry change reconstructed from two presettlement core sections (circa 1750 and 1...
متن کاملHigh Resolution Marine Magnetic Survey of Shallow Water Littoral Area
The purpose of this paper is to present a system developed for detection andaccurate mapping of ferro-metallic objects buried below the seabed in shallow waters. Thesystem comprises a precise magnetic gradiometer and navigation subsystem, both installedon a non-magnetic catamaran towed by a low-magnetic interfering boat. In addition wepresent the results of a marine survey of a near-shore area ...
متن کاملNutrient, chlorophyll, and water clarity relationships in Florida’s nearshore coastal waters with comparisons to freshwater lakes
Models relating chlorophyll to nutrients and Secchi depth to chlorophyll using data from nearshore coastal waters of Florida were successfully developed. The models suggest that phosphorus is the primary limiting factor for phytoplankton in the nearshore coastal waters of Florida and that total phosphorus concentration accounts for 81% of the variance in chlorophyll concentration. The models al...
